LOOK PRETTY, BE QUIET & OBEY
The mantra of her southern American upbringing, this restrictive advice for young girls ultimately compelled artist MaryBeth Printz to abandon her West Virginia home for far-off Alaska. Though she painted in her youth, she found her authentic and rebellious artistic voice in her 60s. She also found the courage to narrate personal stories—and those of others—that tell of fear, hope, and victory. Inspired by the ordinary, MaryBeth sometimes manipulates historical images to connect them with contemporary life, especially the lives of women. A hint of magical realism provides space for the unexpected, evoking the mysteriousness of everyday existence.
