Broken
Broken symbolizes damaged facets of our society, and is a sign of our times. The scene of an earthquake is significant because my home survived the magnitude 9.2 Alaskan earthquake that devastated Anchorage in 1964. Living in the area has educated me on the terrifying impact of a quake, the impermanence of the earth beneath my feet, and most importantly, the fragility of life. The poster on a telephone pole advertises the figure in the foreground. She represents the widespread disappearance of too many young women, with no solution or closure for families.
