SOFREH
‘Artistic reincarnation’ is the way I would describe Masoud Babakhani’s mesmerizing paintings. They both preserve and revitalize the lost art of the sofreh—a special type of kilim once woven by the women of Iran’s nomadic Qashqai tribes. Serving as both a place to sit and as their work space for making naan bread, the sofreh was considered a purely utilitarian object. With familial roots in Qashqai culture, Masoud seeks to both honor and transform his proud heritage in this series of work. His masterful blending of what some might label ‘folk art’ with contemporary ‘fine art’ is wonderfully in synch with our ‘art without boundaries’ curatorial philosophy.
