Dignity

Acrylic on sheep wool khakandaz kilim, 187 x 135 cm, £1800

This piece is painted on a khakandaz (Farsi for “witch” or “magician”), not a sofreh. It’s said such people sat on this type of kilim. Woven from leftover wool, it was used by a family for everyday life. But when guests visited, they covered it with other kilims because they didn’t feel it was worthy. But I think it’s very beautiful, so I wanted to dignify it by repeating the woven design in the egg I painted on it.
