Memory’s Magical Menagerie
I met Brazilian-born artist Tita do Rêgo Silva quite by accident while visiting Hamburg, Germany in June 2022. Searching for a café, I walked into an historic building. Instead I found myself pressing my nose against a window revealing a world of whimsical creatures—Tita’s atelier. Being the warm person she is, Tita immediately invited me in. Tita’s work is a portal into the rich life of her childhood town of Caxias, a melange of African, indigenous, and Portuguese Catholic influences. I invite you to share the sense of enchantment I experienced as her “hybrid” characters conjure up daily life in a faraway world.
