Sitkiye Uluca’s affection for her beautiful island home is palpable. Thanks to its strategic location in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus endured centuries of foreign conquest and occupation—Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman, and British. The resulting cultural wealth is immediately obvious to even the most casual visitor. This complex history also created the conditions for the political and ethnic strife Sitkiye experienced during her lifetime. Her love for Cyprus endured, however. Sitkiye’s paintings and ceramics pay homage to the richness of the island’s heritage, and reflect nostalgia for her peaceful, multi-cultural childhood. Her artwork also reflects concern for the challenges confronting the world beyond her island’s shores.
