Venetians in Famagusta (Past 2)
The Citadel of Famagusta—originally built by the Kingdom of Cyprus—was modified by the Venetians when they took control of the island in the second half of the 15th century. This painting reflects the panel they added above its gate. It depicts the Venetian Lion of St. Mark, and the name of Captain Nicolo Foscario, who directed the alterations. It became known as Othello Castle because Shakespeare’s famous play Othello is set in a Cypriot harbor town.
