PATRINS TO MY CHILDREN
Christine Ford’s highly personal art checks two of my favorite “art boxes”: storytelling and cultural journey. What could be more personal than narrating and paying homage to one’s family heritage, one’s ancestors. For Christine, they are the Romanichal, Roma people who traveled from India over many centuries to ultimately live a frequently itinerant and marginalized existence in the British Isles. The title of her exhibition reflects her desire to preserve this legacy for her own children—patrins refers to markers Romanichals left on the road as encoded messages for others to follow. Christine’s art walks a fine line: it reveals a culture without betraying its secrets. Her father stressed the safety of hiding.
