Vintage Skates

Found object with embroidered textile, 28 x 25 cm, Private Collection

On Saturday morning I went to the Brickfield to skate. I could go on one (skate), but now I can go on two.

In his letters to his sister Frances, young Peter Lightfoot’s description of his experiences of ice-skating inspired me to do more research into ice-skating at that time. I fell in love with these vintage skates and had to buy them. I combined them with a textile tape on which I embroidered lines from Peter’s letter.

Note: The Brickfield was a place where clay had been dug out in the 19th century to make bricks to build local houses. These excavations became ponds over time.
