Lean into the Wind
Textile cutwork & found vintage typewriter, 200 x 40 cm, Private Collection
Our pits are thick with ice.
In this installation the words themselves and the act of writing became central to the artwork. Based loosely on a letter from Peter Lightfoot to his sister Frances, words have been embroidered onto fabric, and cut out to create a textile letter that emerges from a vintage typewriter. The piece is not meant to be entirely legible.
Note: In the 19th century, clay was dug to make bricks to build local houses. The pits (holes) these brickworks left became ponds over time.

Process was an integral element of this work; to create something that wouldn’t fall apart once I cut out the letters involved much detailed planning, and many hours of cutting.
