M’Finda Kalunga Garden

In the African language of Kikongo, this is the ‘Garden at the Other Side of the World,’ a sacred space where the dead live in harmony and plenitude. New York City’s second African burial ground, this powerful place has a rich history, as well as a strong contemporary presence. The garden hosts many multi-cultural festivals (from Juneteenth to Sukkot), gardening programs, readings, movie nights, planting days, and a Bocce tournament—a game from Roman times brought to New York by Italian immigrants.
