El Sol Brillante Community Garden

The first thing one notices is an elegant wrought-iron fence befitting an Italian palacio or French villa. Titled Garden of Earthly Delights, it was created in 1993 by sculptor-welder Julie Dermansky. Founded in the late ’70s, this is one of the four community gardens that belong to the ‘green corridor’ of East 12th Street. There’s an elegance, and a sense of order. Trellised paths lead to hidden nooks and corners. Urns and small statues, strategically placed among the lots, catch one by surprise—like the eagle with a snake in its talons.
