Dias y Flores Community Garden

Dias y Flores, or Days and Flowers, is named after a song written by the Cuban musician Silvio Rodriguez. A romantic song for sultry Caribbean nights, hardly fitting the ‘mood’ expected in a ’70s drug-infested New York City neighborhood. It’s hard to imagine that this spot was once home to an abandoned building used by gangs, junkies, and prostitutes. But a group of local horticulturalists and volunteers took it upon themselves to clear the lot—a beautiful tradition that repeats itself all across this city.
