Lotus Garden

Located on the roof of the Columbia Condominiums’ parking garage, this 7,000-square-foot urban oasis is often missed, due to a discreet entrance, and people not looking up. Thanks to a collaboration among developer William Zeckendorf Jr., and community activists Carrie Maher and Mark Greenwald, stairs were built, and soil, fruit trees, and two fishponds were lifted by a cherry picker. All still tended by local residents. Green space can still be found in this dense city, and lotuses can rise from parking garages.
