The Hunter

Red clay with glaze, 16 x 13 cm, Artist’s Collection (Photo: Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá)

This sculpture rescues memories of my own times hunting, and memories of my father, uncle and grandparents returning from their hunts. It makes me recall the frightening things—including reports of hauntings—that happened during those hunts. It reminds me how skilled we had to be to bring food home for our families. It also represents the complicated relationship I have with the animals and the forest, and all the enchanted beings it shelters.

The glaze was extracted from black rock, and yellow, brown, and grey toá, a very light mineral.
