The Speckled Bull

Here we see what appears to be a normal family portrait. But of course there’s nothing normal about it. The slight tilt of the dominant male figure’s oversized head lets him stare wistfully into space (perhaps reminiscing about his single days). The mother is a fanciful combination of 20th-century dress, santo arms, and Renaissance ruff-and-lace headdress. The diminutive child wears 21st-century footwear. Taken from an Irish illuminated manuscript, the Bull of St. Luke gives this piece its name.
