I really loved creating this piece as it incorporates all my tricks—such as distorting figures and mixing historical eras’ clothing. I’m a great admirer of Velasquez and his infanta images in which he paints children as if they were small adults. In this case, the “small adult” is quite large and prominent. Perhaps she’s a teenager! Arms akimbo and grasping a lacy handkerchief, she’s so proud of her large red bow and cute blue shoes. By placing a small head on the man but retaining large legs and feet, his top half recedes into the background. Despite everyone’s nonchalant stance, the black background and ominous sky hint at an approaching storm.
