Cowherd Sri Krishna

Gouache on paper, 32 x 40 cm, 350 USD

When I was a child I was often sent to graze the cattle in the forest. I was told stories of Lord Sri Krishna, who was a humble cowherd in his youth. That is the image of the Lord I chose to depict in this painting. The chhatra (parasol) above his head symbolizes royalty.

Curator’s Note: Sri Krishna is an avatar of Lord Vishnu (the Preserver), one of the principal deities of Hinduism, along with Brahma (the Creator) and Lord Shiva (the Destroyer). One of the most popular and widely revered deities, he is the god of protection, compassion, tenderness, and love.
