Bloom

Forged & fabricated bronze, 12' x 4' x 2.5'

This sculpture’s imagery references flora in a direct way, as though the work were a flower in the process of blooming. I’m always drawing, and from those sketches I occasionally find the beginning of a narrative I can develop three dimensionally. This piece’s elaborate fan form is the result of that process. The Monticello Sculpture Gardens where Bloom is installed has been designated by the Illinois Botanical Garden as one of the state’s signature gardens. It also features sculpture by prominent artists, including Deborah Butterfield, Richard Hunt, Ruth Duckworth, Peter Volkus, Stephen De Staebler, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Glenna Goodacre. Bloom is dedicated to the memory Professor Lars Hoffman.

Commissioned through the Art-in-Architecture Program of the State of Illinois Capital Development Board for Lewis & Clark Community College, Godfrey, Illinois (2006)
