Aperture

Fabricated steel with a rotating base, 15' x 11.5' x 7'

Aperture is a somewhat unique piece in terms of both its construction and features. I tend to create compositions that are complex in structure and form, regarding the integration of their individual elements. The University’s lakeside setting, however, suggested to me that I take a different, more broad-strokes approach. As a result, this design is more minimalist than most of my other work. It’s also made with heavier steel plate than most of the others, which was a technical experiment and part of my aesthetic decision-making process. Aperture is installed on a massive custom-made bearing that allows it to be rotated—at various times its orientation to the site can be changed.

Commissioned by the University of North Carolina, Charlotte (2013)
