In the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus goes to Hades to bring back his bride. The only stipulation: He must not look back at Eurydice until their journey’s end. This mosaic depicts the torment of a masked Orpheus at the earth’s rim. His temptation to remove his mask and turn around becomes unbearable. (Original photo: Wendy F. Lang)
