Fussena is the name of a former art student I worked with in Accra, Ghana whose hard work and beaming personality brought me pride. This work is part of my upcoming series on Muslim women and girls who are into modern fashion. Many ladies feel pride in wearing a hijab because it’s part of their identity and faith. In America, you often see Muslim women and girls wearing hijabs in an array of beautiful bold colors—whether they’re going to work, school, or simply for a walk.

Hijab can refer to any hair, face, or body covering worn by Muslim women that conforms to Islamic standards of modesty.
