Frances’s Apron

Screen printed apron on vintage fabric, 80 x 40-70 cm, Private Collection

We are really sorry, we have tried our best to let you stay but it can’t be done at all. I really wasn’t fit enough to be left in the first place.

In a shorthand way, Ada Lightfoot is telling her daughter Frances that’s she really not well enough to do the household chores. As the eldest daughter, Frances would have been expected to help her mother with household chores. It was apparent from her mother Ada’s letters that she really missed her daughter’s help (she was staying with her Aunt Pollie). Sometimes her second eldest son Peter had to stay off school to help his mother with the laundry.

Frances’s and Ada’s aprons are made from patch-worked and screen-printed fabrics decorated with my line drawings. Their reality is juxtaposed with their imagined fantasies in my choice of images.
