Laughing Falcon Pot

Red clay with glaze, 32 x 16 cm, Artist’s Collection (Photo: Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá)

In Xakriabá culture, the laughing falcon is the messenger of death. When it sings, our community is on the alert, waiting for news in the coming days of the death of someone they know. This bird is a species of hawk that feeds on snakes and lizards. I admire the laughing falcon both as a member of the hawk family, and for its ability to predict our passage to the spiritual plane. It’s recommended not to hunt it.

The glaze was extracted from black rock, and white toá, a very light mineral.
