Bigger Than My Body

Nylon fabric, tracing paper photo print, LED tube light, audiotrack & soil, 200 x 170 cm, Artist’s Collection

You sank into the darkness of the dark sorrow of the love I forgot to give you

This installation piece reflects the transition of the soul on the deathbed. Spirituality influenced my understanding of the afterlife and the present. I also started looking at other non-religious interpretations. Here the body is represented by a full-size figure stitched and mended, with a photo showing a peaceful facial expression. The body is wrapped in a blanket of soft, comforting soil. The tube light continually glows in the darkness, symbolizing life and a still-beating heart. It starts to violently flash. The sound of flapping wings intensifies, and finally the soul detaches—leaving the physical body to rest.
