A bit of my technique is revealed here. I first primed the panel with white gesso (a bit of it peaks out on the right). Then I painted over it with black, and then red and ochre. It may be a cliché to say that opposites attract. But I use it in my work all the time, juxtaposing austere with busy, obscure dress with simple, and different footwear combinations. The two women seem to be in their own worlds—one downcast in thought, the other staring out at the viewer. Both wear fantastic headgear. I love to include something that’s a little “off”—like the African carving the woman on the left is holding. A sheep peers at the viewer as if about to bleat at any moment.
