When the Sun Rises

Acrylic on canvas, 48” x 48”, 8,500 USD

This piece depicts my niece, Madison Cosen, during her coming-of-age Sunrise Ceremony. During this ceremony, Apache girls symbolically relive the four stages of the life of the first Apache: White Painted Woman or Changing Woman. This is an arduous four-day ceremony that tests the mental and physical strength of the participant. Once the ceremony is concluded, the young girl becomes a woman.
