San Carlos Days

Acrylic on canvas, 40” x 30”, Private Collection

This is a tribute to the Apache people of the San Carlos Reservation. For several years as a child, I lived on their reservation in eastern Arizona. On countless occasions, I witnessed Apache Crown Dancers at various gatherings. One dancer of the group of five was always the clown. My Apache friends told me that if you were a bad kid, he would chase you. I never worried because I was completely mesmerized by the first dancer’s towering crown. I would hurry home and record them on my drawing pads with pens and markers.
