Ego
Hindus have worshipped snakes (nagas) since ancient times. The neck of Lord Shiva is often adorned with a snake, symbolizing the Ego. It is also said the serpent represents the endless cycle of birth and regeneration. The Ego isn’t part of the body, so it can be removed. In my painting I have shown Lord Shiva hurling away Ego (the snake), thereby teaching humans that it is possible to be rid of the Ego (ahankara).
Lord Shiva is part of Hinduism’s holy trinity along with Brahma (the Creator) and Vishnu (the Preserver). The Supreme Lord, he destroys the universe in order to transform it. He is often depicted with a serpent.
