Karagöz Manav/Karagöz the Greengrocer
Throughout most classical plays, Karagöz practiced many occupations, although he wasn’t really good at any of them—such as a boatman to fulfill the wishes of his wife, and even a professional letter-writer despite his unrefined Turkish. Ottoman daily life and his many occupations inspired the artist to create the Greengrocer. Karagöz is painted with joints at his knees, and elbow to reflect his origin as a puppet.
