Rasim was the only son of a Pasha in the Ottoman court: the Minister of Foreign Affairs. His mother was the daughter of a German ambassador, and he got his big blue eyes from her. Brought up in Istanbul’s best schools, he was sent to Paris to complete his education. He spoke German, French, and later Russian, fluently. At the age of 23, he drew the attention of the Grand Vizier and was recruited as a spy for the Sultan. Using the name Wilhelm Gutenberg, he managed to achieve a high rank in the German army during WWI. In the European intelligence world, he was known as “The Ghost of the Orient.”
