Sneeze 2020

Pandemic Series, Cast human pelvic bone in Jesmonite, digitally reproduced, 100 x 100 cm, £850

This sculpture of cast human pelvic bones arranged in a COVID-19 form reflects humanity’s vulnerability and mortality during the pandemic. The sculpture is digitally repeated to create an imaginary sneeze, as if COVID-19 can be seen spreading through the air. The image is ironically decorative, and black-and-white. COVID-19 is so small it can neither absorb nor reflect light, and is actually colorless. The red color often seen in electron microscope images is artificial. Despite its size, this tiny particle has caused global social, economic, and political havoc.

The Pandemic Series is an autobiographical body of work created during the March-August 2020 COVID-19 Lockdown in the United Kingdom, and reflects my isolation as an immunocompromised artist and medically retired doctor. Only materials found in my own home were used in the creation.
