Exuberance!
A trip to the hospital can be a frightening experience for a child and their family. The pleasure of flying kites is the thematic narrative we chose to provide an uplifting respite for patients, family, and hospital staff. Collaborating with fellow artist-blacksmith and Southern University of Illinois, Carbondale alumnus Erica Strecker, we designed a multi-level installation of fanciful oversized kites. A “call to donate marbles” provided half of the sculpture’s marbles, creating a unique opportunity for community involvement. They produce dazzling refracted and reflected color, augmented by LED’s in low-light conditions. All of the materials were selected for their lightweight and inherent qualities of safety, stability, and minimal maintenance.
