Centripetal

Forged & fabricated bronze, 19' x 8' x 9'

Centripetal was conceived from my experiences exploring the wildlife and vegetation of Sarasota’s Gulf Coast environment. Walking on its spectacular beaches, I watched as others only picked up perfect seashells. However, the broken fragments of shells that exposed the complex architecture of internal helix structures interested me the most. The found bits and pieces in nature directly informed this sculpture’s design. The choice to work in bronze rather than steel was in direct response to the region’s harsh and corrosive atmospheric conditions, but ultimately allowed for different aesthetic possibilities.

Commissioned by Sarasota County, Florida for the Sarasota County Florida Judicial Complex (International competition, 2005)
