Scheherazade

Food coloring & acrylic on canvas, 70 x 50 cm, 3.000 Turkish Liras

Scheherazade is the famous storyteller in 1,001 Arabian Nights. Seeking revenge against all the women of his land for his wife’s infidelity, the monarch Shahryar plans to marry each for one night, and then murder them. The vizier’s daughter Scheherazade volunteers to marry Shahryar, and keeps him enthralled every night with her fascinating tales. She thus saves her own life and that of her fellow women. Scheherazade is a fighter against misogyny and a male-dominated society.

Inspired by a 16th-century Ottoman miniature painting
