The Lion & Sun

Fabric dye & acrylic on a ceramic plate, 15 X 15 cm, 1.000 Turkish Liras

The lion-and-sun emblem has ancient Mesopotamian origins with astrological significance, and is a prominent symbol in Persian mythology. During Iran’s Safavid Empire (1501-1736), it represented the two pillars of society: the State and Islam. It later became a national emblem of Persia.

Inspired by a 14th-century Persian miniature painting
