Tribute to Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, an enlightened man of the 18th century. Born in Guadeloupe, he was the son of Georges de Bologne, a wealthy plantation owner, and Anne (Nanon), his wife’s African slave. Taken to France by his father for his education, he became a great musician and composer nicknamed, ‘The Black Mozart.’ During the French Revolution, he headed Europe’s first all-Black regimen and fought on the side of the Republic. He’s one of those emblematic figures who fascinate and inspire me.
