Tapestry of Spirit (1970-present)

Roderick Sykes & Jacqueline Alexander Sykes, South Los Angeles, Acrylic, Size n/a

Painted with the assistance of children and community members, this mural is located in St. Elmo Village, a nonprofit organization, 501(c)(3). Founded by muralist Roderick Sykes and his uncle Rozzel Sykes, the Village has offered an assortment of classes, workshops, and creative inspirations since the early 1970s as a reminder of the things that we have in common rather than those that separate us. The philosophy of St. Elmo Village is that all people are creative and powerful in their own way. Through sharing the creative process, we encourage self-confidence and self-esteem through the arts (https://stelmovillge.org/who-we-are-2/). After a major renovation of St. Elmo Village, the murals are being repainted by community friends and villagers.
