Ada’s Corset
I hope you are warm enough in this bad weather. Hadn’t you better get yourself some woollen singlets and keep the cotton ones for summer.
This work brought together the numerous lines from Ada Lightfoot’s letters to her daughter Frances that mentioned clothes and garments. For me the corset is a powerful symbol that represents the female body throughout history, so my decision to make a corset to tell some of Ada’s story seemed an apt choice.
Note: Singlet is an old-fashioned word for a vest worn under the clothes.
