She Kept Wolves on Her Island

Watercolor & 24-ct gold leaf on paper, 56 x 22 cm, Private Collection

A wolf strolls by under a green tree as a raven looks on. I made this after reading American novelist Madeline Miller’s Circe about the nymph and her life on a Greek island. The tree with a woven trunk or branches is something I often draw. The effect is something like the ancient practice of laying hedges in England, but it is also often found in nature. It is almost as though the tree itself weaves a shelter for the creatures that live in and around it.
