I Shall Plant a Pomegranate Tree

Watercolor & 24-ct gold leaf on paper, 22 x 22 cm, Private Collection

The pomegranate is my favorite fruit, and is highly symbolic in Indo-Persian art, as is the stream of water that runs through the garden. These colorful birds are bee-eaters. They fly north from Africa and return year after year to nest in the orchards and olive groves of the Mediterranean. One day I shall plant a pomegranate tree—perhaps in Greece on the island of Ithaca, where my son plans to live with his family.

Curator’s Note: Indo-Persian art refers to a synthesis of Persian and indigenous styles that occurred following the 16th-century conquests of parts of the Indian subcontinent by the Mughals, a Persianised Muslim culture of Turko-Mongol origin.
