SALLY DE COURCY, ENGLAND

Originally trained as a doctor, I was exposed to extreme human suffering while working in a Cambodian refugee camp after the fall of Pol Pot’s genocidal regime. Those images stayed with me when I was suddenly forced at 40 to change my career for health reasons. I chose “art” because of its ability to tell powerful stories of human fragility and strength. Although my work isn’t literally autobiographical, like many artists, it explores the liminal space between conscious representation and unconscious influence. Repetition as an abstract concept fascinates me, and is an important component of my artistic practice. My recent work explores the humanitarian aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and England’s current refugee crisis. I see my work as a platform for discussion and change.
