Morris-Jumel Community Garden

This green gift is situated in the Morris-Jumel Mansion historic district, and was part of the vegetable garden of the summer house built in 1765 for Colonel Roger Morris and his family. With the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, the family abandoned the property, and it became the headquarters of General George Washington and his patriot officers. Its strategic location on Mount Morris contributed to General Washington’s first victory: the Battle of Harlem Heights. In the end, peace won out. The garden rules.
