The Chumash traditionally lived in an area extending from San Luis Obispo to Malibu in California, including the four Northern Channel Islands. The tomol was a canoe used for hunting, fishing and trading between islands and along the coast. Fashioned from redwood trees that drifted down the coast, it is the oldest example of an ocean-going watercraft in North America. Today it links past generations of Chumash with the present-day community as pictured in this 2010 practice session crossing the Channel from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz Island.
