PABLO CRISTI, USA

My art critiques the status quo, proposing alternative narratives to the ones told by the dominant culture. It explores America’s colonial past and its effect on contemporary society, interrogating cultural erasure, survival, and transformation. Cultural hybridity, resistance culture, manifest destiny, and American identity also interest me. Growing up as a Chilean-American in the mostly Mexican-American neighborhoods of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, my own identity was largely shaped by Chicano culture. Visually, my work collapses varied artistic strategies, and reflects the intersections of pop culture, history, and urban vernaculars. You’ll also find echoes of my graffiti-writing days.
