Preparing For Battle
This mural represents a highly accomplished Comanche man wearing eagle feathers (awarded for significant accomplishments) and cinching up his necktie. He’s preparing for contemporary battle in the courtroom, boardroom or classroom. While Native peoples have volunteered for United States military service in the modern era at a far greater rate than any other ethnic group, many of our contemporary collective battles are fought to secure our sovereignty as Native nations.
Curator’s Note: All of Eric’s murals are visual land acknowledgments—an expression of gratitude, appreciation, and recognition of the homeland of the original people who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial. This acknowledgement encourages people to think about what it means to occupy space on indigenous lands.
