According to the 2020 US Census, California has a Native American population of more than 1.4 million, representing 15% of the total US Native American population. In 1849, California’s estimated Native population was 1 million. By 1900, that number was reduced to 17,000. These 2020 numbers are a testament to the resiliency and resistance of the Native peoples of California. California Love depicts a Bird Dancer relaying the creation stories of his people to the next generation.
