The Dance

Gouache on paper, 32 x 40 cm, 350 USD

Our Baiga tribe is well known for the variety of Karma songs and dances performed during the Harvest Festival. I particularly like to paint the Karma dance, because I imagine myself dancing to the beats of the drum. But as I grow older, my legs refuse to move quickly. It’s only on paper that I can experience the whole sequence of the dance.

Curator’s Note: The Baiga tribe is one of several hundred adivasis, the “first inhabitants” of India who mostly live in remote, difficult to reach regions of the country.
