Helicopter Mom serves up two decades of social phenomenon. In the 1980s there was the backlash from conservative American Christians over heavy metal music’s vinyl records: pentagrams, backmasking (a message recorded backward onto a track), devils and the like. In the 1990s came the rise of overprotective parenting, and thus the “helicopter mom” label was born. The tulip represents purity in the mom’s being while she shields her children from the evils of the world. The helicopters swarm, reinforcing in her mind what she thinks is the righteous way.
