This is the first in a series of four paintings focusing on the children of Gaza, many of whom have not survived this genocide. The children are trapped inside the oval, where I used tea-staining to create a somber effect to depict the confinement of Gaza. Red snake-like creatures slither around, keeping them captive in their own land. A few flowers still bloom. A small window symbolizes a way out. The children look around as if expecting help, or perhaps death. The surrounding world is still alive and beautiful, but is witness to the modern-day genocide. That beauty, however, conceals the evils of war crimes, and hides guns and missiles.

I included Arabic phrases the Gazans utter every day, showing their strong faith. I used black and gold ink to write the string-like words at the top connecting Gaza and the heavens—a direct connection between the people and Allah (God).

I love using oval shapes because they beautifully accommodate my imagery.
